APBI

Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) is a highly targeted procedure performed after a lumpectomy that uses a catheter (or catheters) to insert a radiation seed directly into the breast for a few minutes, twice a day for five days. After each treatment, the seed is removed and no radiation remains in the breast between treatments.

A few benefits of APBI include:

• Treat the lumpectomy cavity where the cancer is most likely to occur
• Minimize the effects of radiation therapy to the surrounding normal tissue
• Treatment is on an outpatient basis
• Cosmetic results are very good in 88% of patients
